A Brief History of Frieschskys10/9/2015
Time is one of the very few luxuries that is not for sale, and the good times are important to remember. Frieschskys started out of our apartments several years ago. They were innocent times, and a hell of a lot of fun.
From turning our living and dining rooms into inventory and photo stations, to shipping all of our packages right out from Tim's kitchen counter, some days it is hard not to reflect on just how far we've come, and how far I want to go. From travelling all around Wisconsin, to a trip that lead us out to Las Vegas, around the Midwest, and now travelling around the world, we have so much to be thankful for.
"How did you even establish these relationships? Why, how, when?" Questions I've heard for ten years. After getting fired from one company and leaving another, I was at my friend's apartment trying to figure out what I was going to do. For months during those unhappy days at my previous recruiting company, I found myself travelling to Goodwill and consignment stores with Tim and Steve Friesch on my weekends. But while they were looking for deals, to buy and sell on eBay, I was lost in my own world walking up and down department isles.
When the day finally came for me to stop working for someone else, and start working for myself... That was when my eyes finally opened.
We had just gotten done watching an episode of Lost, when Tim, Steve, and I went downstairs for a smoke and started talking. The guys asked me how much my bills were each month, and shared with me that selling on eBay could cover those easily. Tim and Steve are brothers, and roommates at the time. They were both selling clothes on eBay individually. Now, Tim was just finishing up his MBA program in Finance and still had a very good accounting position with Enterprise Rent-A-Car when we started to weigh the pros and cons of starting a small business.
All three of us may have different versions of what happened next, but I will share with you my version. It was mid-winter of 2005-2006 when Steve and I walked into a Goodwill store. The very day we walked into this store, an associate put 5 Vicuna suits, all Brioni and Kiton, all new with tags on the suit rack next to... well, what you can usually find at a Goodwill... and one 100% Guanaco Brioni sport coat. (These six pieces were originally made for the late Harry Quadracci, former founder and CEO of Quad Graphics.) And they were ours for the taking! How did this all start? Luck, fate, a blessing, whatever you want to call it, I was in the right place at the right time. $70 was what we spent, and we made $7800 in ten days.
In my mind, that was the day Frieschskys was born. Steve was sill in college, I--well I didn't have anything to lose,--but Tim, he was the only one that had to make a serious decision. Walk away from the security of a company that paid him a salary to roll the dice and see... See if we could hit another jackpot.
