Shirt Cuffs 101

Many people may think it’s so much easier for a man to dress up than a woman. Men have less options: the choices are either a suit or a button down shirt. It can seem like an effortless and somewhat thoughtless process to easily look polished. However, dress shirts come in many forms and it can be tricky to determine when a shirt is too casual or too formal for an occasion. One of the deciding factors of this is the cuff style.

Rounded Barrel Cuffs

Rounded cuffs have smooth edges and give the most casual and relaxed look. They work well with cotton and linen fabrics and are perfect for every day wear.

Scalloped Rounded Barrel Cuffs

Scalloped cuffs are slightly more sophisticated looking than a regular rounded cuff. This style is perfect for work in an office setting.

Mitered Barrel Cuffs

Mitered cuffs, or angled cuffs, have a sharp angle providing a detail to give a professional or more formal look. This cuff looks nice on a cotton shirt and is perfect for work or an evening outing.

French cuffs are the most formal shirt cuff. They are twice as long as standard cuffs, are folded back on themselves, and secured with cufflinks instead of buttons. They look best on a nice cotton or silk shirt and are best worn for dressy occasions such as weddings.
